< Back to News Home Team Sahlen grasps lead, then mechanical foes falter hopes at end of Daytona race

Team Sahlen entered the opening round of the 2015 Continental SportsCar Championship with a strong 2 car line up.  This included Wayne Nonnamaker and Jeff Segal in the #42 entry.  Then Jeff Segal again paired with Will Nonnamaker in the #43 entry.

Practice went very well for the team, with little to no hick ups of mechanical issues.  With over 50+ entries for the race, and little time between each session, it is not always easy to be out 1st in the sessions.  But in Team Sahlen’s case, they were either 1st or 2nd in line in every session, including Qualifying.

For Qualifying, Jeff Segal placed the #42 in 5th spot on the grid, and Will Nonnamaker settled in for 14th on the grid out of 30+ ST class racers.

At the start of the race, Jeff Segal fought hard at the front of the pack, charging around in the top 5 during his entire stint.  Will Nonnamaker fought hard to maintain in the top 15, slipping back to 25th while spinning in fluid on the track.  Will charged back hard, and climbed back to 14th in the running order

At the 1 hour and 30 minute mark, both Team Sahlen entries pitted for fuel, tires  and driver change.  Wayne Nonnamaker emerged from the pit stops in 3rd place.  With a yellow flage caution at the 2 hour mark, Wayne made his move at the restart and went into the lead.  Unfortunately, a mechanical failure in the drivetrain saw Wayne slowly loose power, and he faded back to 10th place, until 2 laps from the end of the race, when the #42 entry just stopped completely on the track.

Jeff Segal fought valiantly in the #43 entry, but he too suffered from a the same mechanical issue as the #42 entry.  Fortunately, the #43 entry got to the finish, with a 15th place result.
