Every year Team Sahlen competes at Watkins Glen International, it is a big event. This is because the event is the “hometown” race for Sahlen’s, being located just up the road in Buffalo, New York. And as well, Sahlen’s is the sponsor of the main event, the Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen.
From 2005-2013, Team Sahlen competed in the Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen. In the 2013 event, the Glen fans were treated to the Team Sahlen Prototype leading the race at the ½ way mark. For the 2014 season, Team Sahlen is returning to their roots, competing in the production car based series, the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge. The team initially competed in this series during the formation inaugural season of 1984. Over the span of 3 decades, the team accumulated 8 Team Championships.
The team is competing in the ST class for Street Tuner cars. Entering into the Watkins Glen weekend, the team is coming off a strong showing at the most recent event at Kansas Speedway. At this event, the team set fastest race lap, narrowly out of 1st place.
“We are very excited about this weekend. We tested at Watkins Glen International earlier in the spring. So this hopefully provides us with a baseline set up to work off of when we unload the cars off the trailer.” – shared team driver Will Nonnamaker
Sharing the #42 racer with Will will be his brother Wayne Nonnamaker. Wayne set his 2nd fastest race lap of the year at the Kansas event. He is hoping for of that pace during Saturday’s Continental event – “It is going to be a real dog fight at Watkins Glen International. Having a good pace from the get go will be very important. We learned a lot from our test, and hopefully that translates well with the warmer June conditions. I really enjoy driving Watkins Glen International. And to have success at Sahlen’s home race would be fantastic.”
The 2nd entry for Team Sahlen will be driven by Joe Sahlen and Joe Nonnamaker. The #43 entry has had a mixture of race results this year. The highlight being a 13th place finish at Sebring. For Joe Sahlen, he will not only be racing at the Glen, but he will be have many official duties as sponsor of Sunday’s Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen. And as well, he will have many family members and close friends attending the weekend cheering him on.
The Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge race will start at 11:35 am on June 28th. The event will be televised on Fox Sports 1 at 10 am on July 6th.
