For any racer in America, getting to drive at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is always a life time goal. For Midwestern racers Joe, Wayne & Will Nonnamaker, the track was only a short 3 hour drive from their roots in Western Ohio.
For Joe Nonnamaker, he remembers going to the Indy 500 in the early 60’s with his brother Jim – “Back then you could still see the famous Indy Roadsters racing, with the advent of the rear engine racers coming over from Europe. I never imagined that I would someday ever be able to race on the track.”
Will Nonnamaker as well recalls his trip to the Indy 500 – “The year was 1988, and it was one of those sticky, humid hot May’s in the Midwest. Our seats were on the front straight, and the crowd stood the entire time of the race. I remember the sound of the Buick V6 Turbos, and how Rick Mears just paced himself to another excellent victory there. My first race ever was actually in Indianapolis, although over at the Raceway Park, for an SCCA Regional. I had just passed my driving school the day before and ran my 1st race there.”
For Team Sahlen, the cars were just on track 2 weeks ago at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park. In that race, the #43 racer took a heavy hit into the inside turn one wall. The crew has worked feverously to make the necessary repairs. It is still in question of whether the #43 will make the race or not. But you can guarantee that the crew at Team Sahlen will do everything in their power to make the race with both race cars.
The Brickyard Sports Car Challenge event will start at 2:35 pm on July 25th. The event will be 2 hours and 30 minutes long. Televised coverage of the event will be on August 3rd at 12 noon EDT on Fox Sports1
