During the 2013 Rolex event at Road America, Team Sahlen did everything but win the race in their Daytona Prototype BMW. The team was quick in practice, on the pole position for the race, and led 85% of the race. Then only to have a small freak manufacture defect part failure take them out of the race at the end. The pain and heartbreak of last year is still felt within the team. To have come so close to the top of winning an overall race in the Prototype doesn’t come often, and the victory slipped through the team’s grasp.
Return 1 year later, and Team Sahlen is back in action at Road America, this time with their new racers that compete in the ST class of the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge. To date, the team has been strong, with three 2nd place finishes and three fastest race laps to date. And the team sits in 2nd place in the Team Point Standings. But to date, the team has not secured a victory at in the 2014 season.
Wayne Nonnamaker shared his thoughts - “Road America has always been a good circuit for Team Sahlen. We have several podiums at this track, including our 2012 2nd place in GT. I like this track, it is a real classic road course. At over 4 miles long, it takes a long time to get around, so you have to make every lap out there count. This should be real fun and exciting. Hopefully we can put on a good show and give the Team Sahlen race fans something to cheer about at the track and at home.”
Returning from a 1 race layoff will be Joe Sahlen. Joe has never been to Road America. Fortunately for him, there is a Test Day on Thursday, which will allow him time to acclimate to the track. With Joe Nonnamaker having a season ending leg injury at the last event in Indy, Joe will be teamed this weekend with his long time co-driver Will Nonnamaker.
Will Nonnamaker shared his thoughts being with Joe – “Joe drove an excellent race at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park. I think that the two of us together should have a great run, and could very well be challenging for a Top 10 come the end of the race.”
Currently, Team Sahlen is in 2nd place in the Team Championship standings, only 6 points out of 1st.
The Road America race will be on August 9th at 12:15 pm EDT.
